AT a public Meeting of the Inhabitants of Nelson, held on Saturday, March 13, 1849, at the Surveyor's office, Captain Arthur Wakefield, R.N., in the Chair: lt was moved by Mr. Otterson, seconded by Mr. Graham, and carried unanimously: ? ? the Committee, with power to add to their number, ? to consist for the present of the following entlemen, vis.: England, Capt. Sclanders, Mr. Graham, Mr. Stephens, Mr. Greaves, Mr. Thompson, Mr. H. A. Jenkins, Mr. Tuckett, Mr. Mac Shane, Mr. Tytler, Mr. V Otterson, Mr. J. Valle, Mr. Patchett, Mr. Wakefield. Capt. Richardson, Mr. Young, Mr. be now appointed, for the purpose of ascertaining the wishes of the Inhabitants with respect to the naming of the principal localities in the town of Nelson and its vicinity; five to be a quorum. Moved by Mr. Patchett, seconded. by Mr. Greaves, and carried unanimously : 2. That the Committee be requested to listen particularly to the wishes of all, but to make their decisions with a due regard to the appropriateness of the names proposed. Moved by Mr. Fell, seconded by Mr. Sclanders, and carried unanimously . 3. That, with a view to prevent unnecessary delay, tbe Committee shall not be required to return answers to any inquiries respecting their decisions, but that the names selected shall be published every week in the Nelson Examiner, with the description of the streets or places in reference to the Surveyor's plan. -Moved by Mr. Valle, seconded by Mr. Young, and carried unanimously : 4. That it be an instruction to the Committee, to retain as far as maybe practicable the native names of mountains, valleys, rivers, and other objects of nature; and that in the names of the streets, roads, squares, and other public places, care should be taken to perpetuate the recollection of events connected with the career of Nelson. Moved by Mr. Stephens, seconded by Mr. Sclanders, and carried unanimously : 5. That Mr. Greaves be requested to act as Honorary Secretary and Treasurer to the Committee. Moved by Mr. Otterson, seconded by Mr. Sclanders, and carried unanimously : 6. That a subscription be entered into for the purpose of defraying the expense of advertising, and other incidental expenses. Moved by Mr. Richardson, seconded by Mr. Young, and carried unanimously : 7. That the thanks of the meeting be given to Mr. Tucket for getting a plan of the town acres ready for inspection a fortnight before the time appointed for selection. . . Captain Wakefield having left the Chair, Moved by Mr. Sweet; seconded by Mr. Jenkins, and carried unanimously : V 8.
