SCHEELITE ORE

OPENING FRESH DEPOSITS MINISTER IS HOPEFUL (From Our Own Parliamentary Reporter 1 Wellington, Oct. 21. The opening up of new reserves of scheelite ore, in which some success had already been achieved, was the subject of a statement made to-day by the Minister of Mines (Mr Webb). The Minister said that scheelite was erratic in its distribution, and mining in the prospecting stage was always speculative, but he was confident that if sufficient labour was available the completion of the present development work would be followed by an appreciable increase in the production of The properties previously worked by the Glenorc-hy Scheelite Mining Company had been taken over by the Government and much had been accomplished there, but manpower was a problem. The Paradise Mine was responding particularly well and it was hoped that eventually sufficient reserve of ore would be proved to warrant the equipment of that property as a producing mine with its own treatment plant. The Mines Department, concluded the Minister, was still investigating the unexplored portion of the Golden Bar lode at Wakamarina in Marlborough, and private parlies were active at Macrae's Flat and Barewood, in Otago, but Glenorchy was the field with the greatest possibilities of increasing production.
