MOTUEKA METHODIST CHURCH

GARDEN PARTY AT WHAKAREWA On Saturday afternoon the gardens at the residence of Mr and Mrs E. S. WTatt, Whakarewa, were looking their best, when the ladies of the Methodist Guild held their annual garden party. A large crowd of members of the Methodist Church and many representatives of other churches in the district attended with the result that the party was a great success both socially and financially. The old homestead, with its well-kept lawns, surrounded with shady trees, provided an ideal setting for the function; and all expressed admiration of the beautiful flower beds, particularly those of orange, red and purple tulips—a blaze of colour in the warm sunshine.

The Rex'. T. Coatsworth and Mrs Coatsworth assisted by Mr and Mrs Wratt welcomed the visitors and, later in the afternoon, Mr Coatsworth heartily thanked Mr and Mrs Wratt for allowing the Guild the use of their beautiful grounds and for the amount of work they had done in preparation for the garden party. Thanks were also extended to the members of the Ladies’ Guild, who were untiring in their efforts on behalf of the church, and to all who had given their support by their presence at the party. Mr Wratt, in replying, remarked that the lion’s share of the work had been undertaken by Mrs Wratt, and added that he and his wife were well repaid in the knowledge that all had enjoyed themselves and that the afternoon had been a success. The stalls were well patronised and the games of croquet keenly contested by participants. Stalls and stallholders were: produce, Mrs A. Goodman; work, Mesdames Kinzett and H. Smith: sweets, Misses Alwyn Smith and Molly Cowin; afternoon tea, Mesdames W. Quayle, G. Starnes, W. Reeves, H. Thomas. J. Robertson, A. Canton, and M. McNabb. Mrs L. Cowin had charge of the games, which were won as follows: Ladder competition, Mr Hulbert; hurry-scurry, Mesdames H. Stringer and A. D. Taylor.
