RICHMOND BOWLING CLUB
OPENING OF 1942-43 SEASON Brilliant xveather conditions prevailed lor the opening of the 1942-43 season of the Richmond Bowling Club on Saturday afternoon, xvhen there xvas a fairly large number of visitors present and six rinks were accommodated on the green. Mr J C. Gaffey. president, welcomed the ladies and visiting bowlers, inviting the latter to participate in games during the afternoon. Before declaring the green open for play Mr Gaffey invited representatives of the various clubs in the centre who were present to speak on behalf of their clubs. Mr J. McMahon (Maitai). Mr F’. Mitchell (Tahunanui), and Mr H. Cowdry (Brightwater), expressed best wishes for a successful season. Telegrams xvere received from the Nelson, Wakefield and Mapua clubs expressing regret at not being able to be represented. The president called upon Mrs A. V. Wells, wife of the vice-president, to throw the “jack,” and Mrs J. G Crcssey to bowl the first bowl, after which Mr Gaffey declared the green open for plav for the season. Enjoyable games were then indulged in by members and visiting boxvlers. During the afternoon tea adjournment Mr A. V. Wells, vice-president formally accepted on behalf of the club a handsome cup donated by the president for club competition Mr Gaffey receix r ed rounds ol applause for his generous donation. Mr Gaffey suitably replied. The ladies were heartily thanked for dispensing an excellent afternoon tea.
