NEW ZEALAND CUP

INTEREST IN THIS YEAR’S EVENT (By “Cuddle”) In answer to many enquiries the following is a little information about the New Zealand Cup:— The conditions for the Cup do not provide for any maximum weight. There is provision for a horse winning, after declaration of weights, of any race of the value of £250 to the winner, or of any race or races of the col-

lective value of £SOO to the winner, being rehandicapped, provided that no horse be rehandicapped to carry over his or her weight-for-age. A perusal of the Cup records reveals that during the last 40 years only ten horses carried over eight stone to victory, and of these only two were over 8.5. These were J. S. Barrett’s Count Cavour, 8.13. in 1926, ridden by F. C. Porter, and Mr A. Louisson’s Nightmarch. 9.6, in 1930, when ridden by that great horseman. R. Reed. The following year Nightmarch was awarded 9.13, but did not go to the post. The greatest weight ever carried to victory oxer the two-mile journey was away back in December. 1870, when Mr Studholme’s Knollingley was successful with 10.6. This horse had won the Cup in January, 1870, with 9.7 on his back. Great interest is being taken in this year’s race. Kindergarten will no doubt be a clear-cut top. lie has not raced over two mites, but was awarded 9.13 for the Melbourne Cup. or 71bs over Beau Vite.
