MANUFACTURE OF ALCOHOL

IMPORTANT NEW METHOD New York, Sept. 8. A new method of making alcohol, which dispenses with distilling, was revealed at a meeting of the American Chemical Society. The method is a washing process using fusel oil. which whisky-makers now throw out. Chemists say that it promises to be the cheapest and biggest source of alcohol, and may furnish enough to supply the entire war needs for synthetic rubber and explosives. The oil extracts alcohol from all sorts of watery wastes never previously used, including wastes of paper mills and sawmills. The process, which also extracts acetone, has not been used commercially, but has worked successfully in the laboratory.
