A NELSON CHRONOLOGY 17th October, 1842: Went to examine the entrance of the ' Brook Street Valley with Captain ’ Wakefield. Mr Tuekett and others. A ! most disheartening and distressing j sight: a winding stream, immense holes J and a soft swamp. On our return CapI tain Wakefield. Mr Greaves and I took j a glass of wine. A subscription of £5 i has been agreed upon for each acre. —Diary of a Settler.
