23 SHOT DOWN
RAIDERS OYER MALTA ATTACKS ON WEDNESDAY ONLY SLIGHT DAMAGE (Rec. 9.50 a.m. I Rugby, Oct. IS. A Cairo communique states. “Enemy attacks on Malta continued yesterday. All the raiders were doomed before they reached the island. Our fighters shot down 12 bombers and 11 fighters. Damage as a result of these raids was slight. Our aircraft losses were five Spitfires, but three pilots are safe.” The R.A.F. Middle East News Service says Axis air forces have last in daylight 56 aircraft and over 130 airmen over Malta in the past three days. Little damage of importance has been inflicted on military targets in the island. although there have been several civilian casualties. No fewer than 25 Jußß’s have been shot down and only four of the 100 men who flew in them were rescued by R.A.F. launche*. Twenty-two Melo9’s, eight Macchi 202 * and one Re2ool were also shot down with none of the pilots saved. R.A.F. losses for the same period were seven Spitfires, but two of the pilots are safe.—B.O.W.
