DESIGNER’S IDEA
FLYING AIRCRAFT CARRIERS
London, Sept. 29. Huge flying aircraft-carriers, with fighters enclosed in the wings, to be launched at the right moment for interception. are visualised by Commodore Sir Dennistoun Burney, designer of the British airship RIOO. The "Manchester Guardian” says that his idea is that the parent aircraft should carry a number of small, very fast fighters. These would be’ of a highly unorthodox design, with propellers of contra-rotating type at the extreme end of the tail. This arrangement of the air-screw would contribute toward providing a very high speed. Fighters, when completely enclosed in the parent carrier’s wings, could also assist their take-off by using their engines. Provision could be made for the fighters to re-embark after having been launched from the carrier. This could be done at 200 m.p.h.
