AXIS FORCES IN EGYPT
OFFENSIVE DISPOSITIONS ABANDONED j DEFENCES INCREASED IN DEPTH London, Oct. 14. Axis forces ... Egypt have abandoned all offensive dispositions, reports the C aim correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph.” Rommel has changed his plans with Teutonic thoroughness and the El Alamcin front is intensively wired and mined with a view to making it impregnable. The main Axis positions across the El Alamcin neck are being steadily increased in depth and now extend back nearly three miles. The visit of the South African Prime Minister, Field Marshal Smuts, may foreshadow the coming of the inevitable battle in Egypt, says the "Daily Express” in an editorial. The weight of air attacks against Malta reveals the importance of the convoys now reinforcing Rommel. The presence of Üboat packs off Africa shows how much the Axis desires to interrupt our Middle East reinforcements. The cutting of this route is given priority in Gerlor us, victory in Egypt could provide the master key to the winning of the war.—P.A.
