EARLY PEAS READY
PICKERS REQUIRED APPEAL BY W.W.S.A. Already the Primary Production! Council had sent forward a request! lor early pea pickers, announced Mrs! If. Atmore at the annual meeting of i the W.W.S.A. held last evening. Some* 25 to 30 workers were required to! commence on 20th October at Hope,! where 30 acres of early peas were ready for picking which would go! on for nearly five weeks. Mrs Atmore appealed to the \ women of the Nelson district to un- I dertake this type of work during the; coming season. Production, she said, was the foundation of the whole war, structure and everyone must take a 'j part. Some women might be able to give one. two or three days a week j to the work, while others could do! full-time work. She hoped that, as j there were now few young girls not 1 doing essential work, the house- ! wives would be able to re-arrange! their domestic duties to give some time to this work. The pea pickers would be paid at I the rate of 9d per bucket of peas! picked and it was possible to earn ; from 7s (id to 10s per day. Tea would ! be provided for workers and transport was being arranged.
