BOYS FROM EAST END
HOLIDAY AT FAMOUS SCHOOL PLAY ON FIELDS OF RUGBY London, Aug 28 Three hundred of the boys who still live and play in the war-scarred streets of Stepney will soon use the playing fields of Rugby. Consecutive batches of 50 boys will stay at the school for a week. The man who has made this possible is the Rev. Reginald French. Rural Dean of Stepney, who is himself an Old Rugbeian. and has a son at the school He hopes the boys will imbibe some of the spirit of the place and, to prepare them for this, intends to show them a film of Tom Brown s School Days Lilian and Mary Hughes, daughters of the author, both gave up a life of comfort to serve the East End poor. Now Tom Brown’s old school is continuing their good work The East End Mission which is collaborating in this scheme, has for many years taken the women and children of Stepney and Bethnal Green to the country and the seaside.
