VISIT TO TAKAKA
BISHOP OF AOTEAROA On Sunday there was a packed church at Takaka to hear Bishop F. A. Bennett preach on the occasion of his first visit to Golden Bay as Bishop of Aotearoa. His Maori brethren attended in large numbers. Taking as his text, “Them that honour me, I will honour,” he preached on the relations between Maori and pakeha. In stressing the equality of the two racffi, he pointed out the equal sacrifices made by both on the battlefields of the Middle East,
and read the poem written by a Maori commander to his mother just before he died fighting for his country. He referred to the splendid fighting qualities shown by the Maoris on the battlefield, their capabilities for love and friendship, and the honour in which they held their parents, and the Bishop concluded with the question, “Are we worthy of such sacrifices?” After the service, Bishop Benett held a short service for the Maori people. In the evening he met several residents whom his daughter, Mrs Reg Mason, had invited to her home for supper. The Bishop stayed with his daughter while he was in Takaka.
