EARTHQUAKE MOVED BIG BELL

WELLINGTON CARILLON OUT OF ACTION Wellington, Sept. 2. The Wellington Carillon is no longer playing. Colonel A. Cowles, chairman of the management committee of the National War Memorial Carillon, and of the Carillon Society, said that although the building, which had been constructed with the possibility of earthquakes in view, had not been damaged by the recent shocks, one of the larger bells, weighing over one ton, had moved in position. It is the bell given in memory of the men of the Hutt Valley who gave their lives in the last war. It was practically impossible at this time to get an engineer to undertake the replacement of the bell in its proper position, but it had been made safe in the meantime. Another reason why the bells were not being rung was that the electrical system had been affected, and it was not possible at present to get a qualified electrical engineer to attend to it.—P.A.«
