DAY OF PRAYER
MR FRASERS STATEMENT RENEWAL OF PLEDGE Wellington, This Day. The following statement was made by the Prime Minister, Mr F’raser, in Washington to-day: “On the third anniversary of the outbreak of war the New Zealand people will I know desire to renew their pledge to continue the struggle for however long until victory is achieved and to count no sacrifice too great to achieve that end. I feel I can say with truth to the Government and people of the Unit, ed States that we in New Zealand arc undeterred by the disappointment and losses which were inevitable in the circumstances in which the war was forced upon us, that we look forward with confidence to the ultimate outcome, and that our main desire is to march with the other United Nations in the cause of justice and liberty.”—P.A. SERVICES IN NELSON TO-DAY Services held in Nelson to-day in accordance with the King’s wish that the nation should be remembered in its crisis by a National Day of Prayer met with a good response. Short services in churches are reported to have been well attended, and the City Council Chamber was packed for both services held during the lunch hours. The Bishop of Nelson, the Rt. Rev. P. W. Stephenson, and the Rev. C. Blair conducted the first service, while the Dean, the Very Rev. P. B. Haggitt, and Pastor J. K. Robinson officiated at the second service.
CROWDED WELLINGTON SERVICE Wellington, This Day. A crowded congregation attended the chief Wellington intercessory service this afternoon. The Governor-General. Sir Cyril Newall, American and other Allied representatives were present and members of the New Zealand Administration. Services in various churches are also being well attended. —P.A.
