£lO FOR SMOKO WATER WINDMILL ATTACKED WITH AXE A drink far dearer even that that entailed by being caught after hours on licensed premises was recently enjoyed by a party of workmen near the Delta Station, reports “The Express.” It cost one of them the round sum of £lO when he appeared before Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M.. on the charge of having committed mischief by wilfully damaging a windmill. Actually he cut it down with an axe in order to get water—an operation which cost him £7 in compensation to the owner, Terrence Graham John Watts. In addition, the Court inflicted a fine of £3.
The defendant was Allan Grindley Buchanan, who was stated to be an Army driver on loan to the P.W.D. Senior Sergeant Smyth said the defendant had endeavoured to get some water at the windmill, but being unable to do so he had chopped the stand down with an axe.
Asked if he had anything to say for himself, Buchanan explained that he had gone to the mill to get water for smoko—only to find that it was not pumping. “We were working a long way from camp, and we wanted a drink. After cutting it down I was able to get water,” he added.
Mr Maunsell: You have landed yourself in for heavy damages. It shows you to be reckless with regard to property.
