INVASION OF EUROPE
BY WAY OF ITALY SUGGESTED Canberra, Sept. 1. The theory that an invasion of Central Europe might best be tackled through Italy and the southern Balkans is advanced by Admiral d’Argenlieu, Fighting French leader in the Pacific. While, in his opinion, a Channel invasion would liberate northern France and the Lowlands, he thought it would be a difficult base for an invasion of Germany because of the enemy’s defensive strength in the west. It was of major importance to Germany. Italy should be pushed right out of Africa. If the Allies still possess the initiative at Dakar they should act there immediately.—P.A. BRITISH WARSHIPS REPORTED AT GIBRALTAR Vichy, Sept. 1. It is reported from La Linea that two British battleships, seven torpedoboats, and a large United States oiltanker entered the Gibraltar roadstead. Thirty-eight twin-engined bombers have also arrived at Gibraltar.—P.A.
