PIGEON ACTS AS SPECIAL MESSENGER: This picture was taken during operational duty aboard one of Britain's “Lerwick” flying boats. Carrier pigeons are taken on the patrols and used if radio communications break down or during "silent” periods. The Saunders Roe “Lerwick” is a high wing all metal monoplane Hying boat. The aircraft, which is powered by two Bristol Hercules engines developing 1375 h.p., is a longdistance reconnaissance bomber. It is equipped with three power-operat-ed multi gun turrets.
