CITY IN BURMA BOMBED
LARGE FIRES STARTED Chungking, Aug. 30. General Stilwell in a communique states: “American bombers raided Myitkyina and started three large fires in the city, and scored direct hits on aerodrome dispersal areas and dropped anti-personnel bombs on runways and barracks. None of our planes or personnel was lost. This raid is in addition to those reported by American headquarters at New Delhi, in which American and R.A.F. fighters and medium bombers blasted Myitkyina on the two previous days, ruining extensive aerodrome repairs made by the Japanese.—P.A. ENEMY RIVER CRAFT BOMBED (Rec. 10.15 a.m.) Rugby. Aug. 31. A communique issued at New Delhi states: “Yesterday the R.A.F. bombed Japanese river craft at Akyab. Lowlevel attacks were made on one steamer, which was seen to be sinking. Some aircraft returned to their base without carrying out their mission owing to bad weather. —8.0. W.
