MILNE BAY-PORT MORESBY Sydney, Aug. 28. Milne Bay is a large bay. 20 miles long by 10 miles wide, with its head 28 miles from Samarai. the Administrator of Papua, Mr H. L. Murray, said in Sydney. . “The head of the bay is rather fiat, but the south side is particularly mountainous,” he said. “The water is deep and clear of reef. There are coconut plantations along the bay, and the first anchorage is at Gili Gili, where Lever Brothers have a big factory.
“To the north, at Ahioma, there is another anchorage and also a factory, which is not as large as the Gili Gili one. The natives are quiet and civilised and generally speak English.” Mr Murray said that to traverse the distance between Milne Bay and Port Moresby the enemy would have to pass many rivers and lakes, which are natural obstacles to any advance.
There is a Sacred Heart Mission station, at Milne Bay, which has been established for more than 10 years. Father Baldwin and Brother Fraser re_ mained there, but the nuns were evacuated when New Guinea was attacked early in the year.
