OBITUARY
MR H. G. BERRYMAN The death occurred last evening at the age of 83 years, of Mr Henry Giles Berryman, who had had over 40 years’ experience in local body work in Canterbury and Nelson. Born in Cornwall in 1859 he was edu- . cated at Abbey School, Penzance, and was an enthusiastic cricketer and footballer. He arrived in New Zealand in 1880. and spent 30 years in Canterbury, at Ashburton and Mt. Noble, the latter being the sheep station which he owned. He was a member of various committees in Canterbury and South Canterbury, j including the Waipara County Council, j In 1911 Mr Berryman sold Mt. Noble J and bought the Stanley Downs station. , Motupiko. He represented his riding on j the Waimea County Council from 1920 to 1928. and was a member of the Nel- j son Hospital Board from 1923 to 1928. j Mr Berryman took a keen interest in i a number of matters concerning the ' welfare of the district, particularly I hydro-electricity, and was a keen ad- ' vocate for the development of the ' Gowan. He came to live in Nelson eight ; years ago and was an active player of the Nelson Bowling Club up to last j season. The late Mr Berryman is survived by his widow and three sons—Captain W. O. Berryman, M.C., the first New Zealander to be awarded the Military Cross in the last war: Messrs Hugh Berryman, of Ward and Fred Berryman, of Stanley Downs, Motupiko. A fourth son, Lieut. Stanley Berryman was knled in action in Palestine in 1918. There are also two daughters, Mrs George Rutherford, of Christchurch, and Mrs John Orgias, of Gisborne. MR E. W. HOLBROOK An association of 50 years with the grocery trade in Palmerston North was ended recently with the * death of Mr E. W. Holbrook, of Wal-j degrave street. Born in the Isle of Wight in 1871. Mr Holbrook two years later came to New Zealand ] with his parents an dresided at Nel-! with his parents and resided at Nel-! farming for some years, and moved! to Palmerston North 50 years ago. j He was employed by several grocery! firms in the city until 36 years ago.' when he began business on his own; account and retained this interest until his death. As a young man he was a keen footballer and later was j an enthusiastic member of the Oroua Druids Lodge, serving in all the of- i fices. He was an elder of the Baptist j Church and an attending member for 49 years. In March 1894, Mr Hoi- ! brook married Miss Gertrude Zillai Newth. a daughter of the late Mr and: Mrs T. Newth, of Foxton, by whom he is survived, together with twer daughters. Mrs G. S. Thompson and Miss F. Holbrook, of Palmerston North There are also two grandsons, two step-brothers, Messrs Walter and James Hockey, one brother,: Mr B. Holbrook, and one sister, Mrs G. Millar (all of Nelson). Another brother was the late Mr George Holbrook (formerly of Nelson and later of Palmerston North).
