BIG FLOODS IN CHINA
MILLIONS RENDERED HOMELESS JAPANESE-HELD RAILWAY CRIPPLED (Rec. 10.0 a.m.) Chungking, Aug. 30. The most disastrous flood for a century inundated 60.000 square miles and 21 towns, held by the Japanese, in the northern Anhwei province. A total of 3000 houses collapsed, and the Japanese-controlled rail traffic to Tientsin was severely crippled. Millions of Chiense are homeless, and many are dying of starvation and disease. The Chinese High Command announced that Chinese legions are storming the suburbs of Nanchang, the main Japanese base in the Kiangsi province. BJG LOSSES BY JAPANESE Chungking, Aug. 29. An official review of the three and a half months’ campaign in the Chekiang and Kiangsi provinces discloses that the Japanese suffered 14.000 casualties at Kinhwa and Lanchi, 18,000 at Chuhsien, and 8000 at Shangjao, The present situation is as it was before the Japanese started their drive from Nanchang.—P.A.
