ENEMY DESTROYERS BOMBED
ONE SUNK AND ONE SEVERELY DAMAGED THIRD SET ON FIRE Rugby, Aug 29. A United States Navy communique states: “Late on Thursday afternoon United States patrol aircraft based on Guadalcanar Island sighted one small and three large Japanese destroyers apparently loaded with supplies and equipment for isolated Japanese patrols believed to be operating near the eastern end of Santa Isabel Island. After reporting contact patrol planes attacked and secured a hit on a small destroyer. Then a striking force of Douglas dive-bombers arrived from Guadalcanar. They attacked the three large destroyers, one of which was sunk, the result of a heavy explosion following bomb hits. A second large destroyer was severely damaged and probably sunk, while the striking force observed a small destroyer previously hit by patrol planes to be crippled and burning. No further action has been reported in this area.”—B.O.W.
