FIRE PRECAUTIONS IN CITY
VISIT BY N.Z. CONTROLLER AND ADVISER The Dominion Fire Controller, Mr R. Girling Butcher, and Mr A. D. Wilson, adviser on wartime fire precautions in New Zealand, visited Nelson yesterday. Discussions were held on the fire-fighting organisations of Nel. son with the superintendent of the Nelson Fire Brigade (Mr A. J. Drummond) and the officer in charge of the auxiliary fire service (Mr F. V. Powell). Close enquiries were made into the organisation, personnel, plant and equipment of the services and Mr Wilson stated that he was satisfied that, for E.P.S. requirements at least, the Nelson Fire Brigade and the Emergency Fire Service were as efficient in personnel and equipment as any brigade in the provincial towns he had so far inspected. After an inspection of the principal fire hazards of the city, the question of the use of a static water supply —the installation of a small reservoir somewhere in the centre of the city--was considered. This would provide for a reserve supply of water supplemented by water pumped from *he river. No recommendation on this matter was given bv Mr Wilson, who is to complete his tour of the Dominion before making any recommendations.
The E.P.S. headquarters control system was later inspected and Mr Wilson stated that it was apparent that any information concerning a fire
would be readily available to the firefighting services. He thought the system a good one. The Dominion Fire Controller and Mr Wilson were conducted by the Mayor (Mr E. R. Neale) through the principal streets of the city and on an inspection of the Port area. They later inspected the fire precautions services at an air station.
