FATAL SCALDS

FALL INTO HOT POOL MAORI CHILD AT ROTORUA Rotorua, Aug. 29. Severely scalded at Whakarewarewa on Friday, a seven-year-old Maori child died in the Rotorua Hospital yesterday. The victim was Wairua-a-rangi Hemopo, daughter of Kira Hemopo, of Whakarewarewa. The child, with several other children. was playing with a tennis ball in a backyard in the Maori village. The ball bounced into one of the hot pools, and when the child went to retrieve it the ground at the side of the pool collapsed beneath her, and she fell into the hot water. She was pulled out of the pool by Miss Elsie Retima and taken to hospital, where she died early next morning.

An inquest was opened yesterday by the coroner, Mr W. L. Richards, and adjourned sine die.
