IMPORTANCE OF SAFEGUARDING REALISED London, Aug. 29. In the course of a speech at the Guildhall, the American Ambassador irt London, Mr Winant, referred to the importance of Central and South Arnerica to the United Nations’ cause, and also stressed the strategic importance .of the Panama Canal. The United States, he said, had always recognised the safeguarding of the canal as absolutely the initial condition for the defence of the American Continent. It was of the greatest importance that all countries in close proximity to the canal should act in unison in face of any external dangers and. he added, he hoped and believed that collaboration and solidarity among the American republics and between them and the rest of the freedom-loving nations would continue after the present dangers had passed.—P.A.
