IMPORTANCE OF PANAMA

DEFENCE OF AMERICAN CONTINENT PERMANENT COLLABORATION DESIRED (Rec. 9.50 a.m.) Rugby, Aug. 28. In the course of his Guildhall speech Mr J. G. Winant referred to the importance of Central and Soutl. America to the United Nations’ cause and also stressed the strategic importance of the Panama Canal. The United States, he said, had always recognised the safeguarding of the canal as absolutely an initial condition for the defence of the American continent. It was of the greats est importance that all countries in close proximity to the canal should act in unison in the face of any external dangers and he added that he hoped and believed that collaboration and solidarity among the American Republics, and between them and the rest of the freedom-loving nations would continue after the present dangers had passed.— 8.0.
