RICHMOND W.D.F.U.
I Owing to the prevalence of illness, I there was a smaller attendance than usual at the August meeting of the Richmond branch of the W.D.F.U.. 1 held in the Town Hall. Mrs Hugh ' Brown presided. Apologies were reI ceived from many members. Referi ence was made to the serious illness of the president, Mrs Palmer, and all joined in sending her a message of sympathy, good cheer and hopes of r» , A letter was read from Miss Tomlin 1 son, thanking the branch for work sent i in. The Mayor wrote asking that I waste paper be taken to the depot at i Mr May’s shop, rubber delivered at Mr j Cromie’s or Mr Warring’s garage, and I that non-ferrous metals be kept till j the usual council rubbish collection. when it should be put out apart from I other materials. A drive for bottles is . to be undertaken later. The sum of £ 1 was donated to the Sick and Wounded Fund. , It was announced that the date of the annual ball had been fixed for Wednesday, 2nd September. As most i of the proceeds from this f unction go in one way or another towards patriotic ! funds, members were asked to do their ( best to make it the success it has always been hitherto The roll call. “Old Rubber," met with ' a good response. An enjoyable afternoon tea was then served by the hostesses, Mes- : dames Tunnicliffe, Wallace, Springer. G. Wilkes and Woods. Mrs Proctor gave a most interesting account of her escape from Singapore. I Her* narrative gave her listeners a I sympathetic insight into the difficulties ■ and hardships—apart from actual dan- ; gers—endured in bringing small children, unaided, under war conditions, from the danger zone. On Mrs Hockey’s motion a vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Proctor, and she was presented with a shoulder spray. Red Cross articles were received and given out.
