KILLED IN ACTION
Do you remember how we walked the vale When summer spread a wealth of scarlet flame; Where autumn triumphed in ash. and poplar grove, And o'er hill and dale asserted peerless claim? And wandering down the little lane, Where the scent of new-mown hay came drifting through The sweet briar hedge, and a blackbird scolding As from a branch we shook the evening dew? How, hand in hand, we listened to the chime Of church bells ringing o'er the golden sheaves; And sitting on the old mill stile you crowned Me with a coronet of russet leaves? And, in springtime, in the orchard ’ncath the hill When apple blossom’s sweetness, in surging tide, Fell upon us as you gently shook a tree? — Smiling, you looked at me and said, “My Bride.” Perhaps, in walking down some Heavenly street, You will pause, and remember autumn trees And lingering by a primrose bank with me. And lift your head for scent of hay upon the breeze. Maybe your heart;will feel a stinging pain Of deep longing to walk the vale again. Louise Matheson (Mariri).
