RUSSIAN ADVANCE
CENTRAL FRONT FIGHTING NEW COUNTER-OFFENSIVE OPENED SUCCESS BEFORE STALINGRAD (Rec 2.10 p.m. London, Aug. 28. While the Russians are continuing to advance on the central front and have opened a counter-offensive near Shlusselhurg, they have also had some success before Stalingrad. The British United Press Moscow correspondent reports that the Russians have retaken three villages in a counter attack north-west of Stalingrad. In this counter-attack the Russians cut the communications of a force which broached the Russian linos a few days ago. They are steadily wiping out the remainder of 100 tanks which was the original force, despite determined Ger man attempts to uppl.v them from ‘ransport planes. “Red Star” says the Russians in the letskaya ares are -messing the enemy ard at many ; vnts on the Don bend The Germans, attempting to wrest the nitiative, pu‘ in cavalry for the first time on the southern front but Russian tanks routed them and killed 500. The Moscow radio states that the Russians on the central front repelled counter and occupied eight fortified. inhabited localities. The Germans are reported to be moving up large forces of tanks and planes on the Rjev sector The Russians continue to advance on the Kalinin front. The Germans are killing the inhabitants in villages they are forced to leave. A Stockholm message reports that the Russians have begun a new counteroffensive near Shlusselburg and the Germans have only partly checked the attacks, which are continuing.—P.A.
