DIRECTOR’S APPEALS
NO SPECIAL SIGNIFICANCE Auckland, Aug. 26. j “When an appeal is lodged in the name of the Director of National Ser- | vice it does not mean that the case is t supported by the director,” said the ? j Crown representative on the No. 2 » j (Auckland) Armed Forces Appeal 1 j Board. Mr L. N. Harris, last night. Two ! appellants who came before the board : j were under the impression that the j fact that their appeals lad been lodged . in the name of the director lent the i j coses a special significance. . i Mr Harris explained that the only t J way in which appeals which had not j | been lodged in the prescribed time could : J be brought before the board was for i ! them to be lodged by the Director of . j National Service. This was nothing , j more than a formality which clothed . j the board with the jurisdiction for hear--1 ing the appeal which it would otherwise . Jack. The onus of establishing a case to the satisfaction of the board still rested on the person seeking relief. ; "The sooner this matter is cleared up . the better,” said the chairman of the board. Mr I. J. Goldstine. “It is as; well that the public should realise the position with regard to appeals in the • name of the Director of National Service. Such cases are judged, not by J the fact that they bear the director’s i name, but on the evidence produced bythe person seeking relief. ’
