PRICE OF BEER

REDUCTION IN CHRISTCHURCH (By Telegraph—Special to ‘‘The Mail”) CHRISTCHURCH, 21st January. Though the reduction in the price of beer from (Id to 4d a “handle” may be a popular move from a consumer’s point of view, it is unlikely to become general, a reporter was fold to-day. At least two Christchurch hotels liavo tried it in the last few days, but one. is said already to have reverted to the higher price. With reduced consumption, as shown by oflicial figures, looming large, the reduction in price was a move to attract custom and increase consumption, but it is not a move that is likely to gain in momentum. One man who is interested in hotel management said that it was quite certain that the lower price would not become general. A hotelkeeper pointed out that if tho price was reduced it might be a temptation to the Government, wanting funds, to increase the excise duty.
