ARSON ADMITTED
COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE (By Telegraph—Press Association) NAPIER, This Day. Three charges of arson were admitted by Samuel Hazlett, a labourer, in the Police Court. It was alleged he set lire to the grandstand at Napier Park racecourse on 24th December; the Convent school at Hastings on Ist January; and the Roman Catholic school at Napier on 3rd January. Giving evidence for the police, Plain-Clothes Countable Coddington read a statement signed by accused when interviewed on 3rd January, in which he admitted having committed the crimes. He said he sec the church buildings alight so as to bring before the public the fact that he was lighting the Catholic Church and the police in obtaining compensation for an accident suffered by him when working for the New Zealand Perpetual Forests Ltd. at Putaruru three years ago. After hearing evidence for the prosecution tlie accused pleaded guilty to all three charges and was committed to the. Supreme Court at Wellington for sentence.
