“Home, Sweet Home,” had its first performance on the night of Sth ALiy, 1823. when it was sung at Covent Garden. in the course of the first performance of the opera in which it appears —Sir Henry Bishop’s "Clari, libretto by John llenry Payne. The song made both an instantaneous hit for itself, tuid the opera’s fortune. In a year, 100,OtW copies of the song were sold. Chiefly by means of the popularity of “Home, Sweet Home,” “Clari” was performed on and off during 50 years.
