UNDER-CONSUMPTION
PRESENT TREND OF PRICES BANK PRESIDENT’S REVIEW (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 22nd January, 12.50 p.m.) LONDON, 20th January. At the Midland Bank meeting Mr Reginald McKenna, who presided, reviewed the monetary and industrial situation. He said that there were times when, judged by interests. of the general economic welfare, thrift might be carried to excess. The present crisis was one of under-consumption and until sufficient confidence returned to stimulate buying of stocks, goods were not likely to "dwindle nor production to increase. It was not likely that there would be a marked revival in confidence until prices showed a tendency to harden. “When the present trend of prices is arrested and reversed we shall see the end of the growth of unemployment.”
