town board meeting The fortnightly meeting of the Tahunanui Town Board was held last evening when there were present: Messrs G. Cunningham (chairman), T. W. Roberts, M. O’Sullivan, G. T. Robins. L. Ingham, and E. G. Barton. Accounts amounting to £29 11s lOd were passed for payment. The chairman reported on the working of the Unemployment Board and the local unemployment committee at Nelson.
It was decided to permanently seal a section (one chain) of Muritai street adjoining the main road as an experiment. A letter was received from Mr E. C. Russell staling that he intended to charge the Board £6 a dav compensation for the time his buses were not allowed to travel over the Rocks road on account of the bitumen work being carried on. The letter stated that it was understood the road was to remain open. The Board replied stating that it took no responsibility for the closing of the road, which was closed at the discretion of the Public Works Department. The Tahuna Sands Association were granted permission to rope off a section of Beach road on 2nd February when the association is holding a gala on the beach. The P. and T. Department stated that the time was not opportune for the erection of a public telephone in Tahuna. The matter will be considered next financial year. . . Several members were of the opinion that Tahuna unemployed had not been given enough consideration for work being done on the beach. Mr Barton stressed the point that most of the work done at galas was done bv Tahuna residents. thereby enabling such money to be spent. The Board is to ask for consideration to be given to Tahuna men. Plans and specifications for the proposed safety zone at Radford’s corner were submitted to the Board. In view of the amount of expenditure involved it was decided to postpone consideration till next meeting. Mr Radford, the Board clerk, reported on his attendance at a meeting of the Nelson Provincial Progress League. The chairman considered the Board should receive a subsidy on the maintenance of the deviation road over the hill on account of the increased traffic while the main road is closed. It was decided that on account of the increased use of the road by traffic being diverted over it, to metal Bisley avenue and Edward street. , . Mr J. O’Sullivan was elected deputy chairman of "the Board.
