GRIP OF DROUGHT

AMERICAN STATES PLIGHT OF PEOPLE DESTITUTION AND STARVATION (United Press Association—By Eleetrio Telegraph—Copyright) WASHINGTON, ,18th January. The severity of the situation in the drought areas is becoming increasingly apparent and tlie attention of official Washington is being focussed upon reports of destitution and starvation which are pouring in from the suffering areas. President Hoover, who is facing a continual battle with the Senate over relief provisions, has appointed a special committee headed by Mr Coolidge to supplement the Red Cross drive. The latter’s latest reports assert that need of aid is appearing in new districts daily, with the demand for help growing increasingly heavier in districts in Texas, and Tennessee. Mississippi was added to those already requiring relief. Suffering is especially acute in Texas. Two counties there to-day reported that 500 families were on the verge of starvation. Winter storms will probably cause many helpless people to freeze to death if they occur with their usual severity. Demands for medical relief are becoming numerous, as are requests for food and clothes.
