ORCHARD PROSPECTS

GOVERNMENT REPORT The Director of the Horticulture Division, Department of Agriculture, lias received reports from his officers regarding orchard and'marketing conditions at the end of December, 1930,. from which the following special references made to apples and pears onjy are taken : Auckland.—Apples: Drop developing satisfactorily. Lemons: Trees now recovering from the effects of frost and showing a fair crop of blossom. Thames.—Apples : Heavy crop. Waikato.—Apples : Early varieties short, others medium to heavy, > Gooseberries : Good crops being harvested. Gisborne.—Apples: The apple crop now appears to be somewhat heavier than indicated in my November report, although taken generally crop is light. Hawkes Bay.—Apples*: Crop developing well, fruit clean. Some varieties irregular crop, especially Dunn’s and Dougherty. Pears: Fair crop generally all varieties. Drought conditions prevailing and season backward. Apples well developed for time oi year, but may exact reduced size in' fruit, especially on slopes if present conditions continue. Wanganui.—Apples : Light. Hailstorms and eight frost were experienced during the month. .Manawatu and Wairarapa.—Apples: Fairly well forward; light to average crop. The apple crop in export orchards (Wairarapa) at the present time looks exceptionally well. The small fruit crop is turning out well. Nelson. —Apples: Crop developing well. The weather was very changeable at beginning of month, but dry conditions now prevailing, and a good rain would be beneficial.

Nielson Central. —Apples : All varieties developing well despite abnormally) dry conditions. Pears: Good to heavy crops developing well. Motueka. —Apples: Looking particularly well. Good average crop all through district. Pears: Good crops of clean fruit. Marlborough.—Apples: Heavy crops of most varieties. Since the November report there lias been another visitation of hail, which has further reduced the crop by approximately 5 per cent. Canterbury.—Apples: Medium to heavy crop. Otago.—Apples: Crops on the whole about average. Pears: below average. Central Otago.—Apples: Jonathan heavy; Delicious below average; others good crop. Pears: Patchy, below average.
