Richard’s idea for carting the chest home was to leave Ted on guard while he, with Polly and Gwen, found the shortest road through the woods. “Because,’’ he explained, “the only way to get it home is to make some sort of truck and pull it through the woods, and, of course, it will, be necessary to find a path that isn’t too bumpy.” So Ted was left behind. “This seems pretty -good,” said Richard as they strode along. “Yes,” said Gwen, “we ought to manage it along this road.”
