SPEECH BY LORD STONEHAVEN BRITISH GOVERNMENT CRITICISED (United Proas Association —Bjv Electrid Telegraph—Copyright* LONDON, 16th January. “Five years’ Governor-Generalship lias resulted in my returning home saturated with the Empire spirit,” said Lord Stonehaven (formerly GovernorGeneral of Australia), speaking at Stonehaven. “A great Imperial question should not he a party one. All looked aghast at the failure of the Imperial Conference, when Mr Thomas contemptuously described the dominions’ offer ,of a business understanding as a humbug. I wish the Government had used one-tenth of its activities on developing Empire markets instead of using all its energies to support Soviet Russia.”
