“IDLE AND DISORDERLY”
UNEMPLOYED DEMAND ARREST MARCH TO POLICE STATION (By Telegraph—Press Association! AUCKLAND. This Day. Demanding that they should be arrested as “idle and disorderly persons in that they had no visible means of support,” a. large number of unemployed marched from tiie Trades Hall to the city police station. Their view was that if they could be arrested and put in gaol they would at least receive food and shelter, and when they arrived at the watch house two of their number were appointed to interview the police. However they were told that no arrests could be made. After a demonstration outside the police station the crowd again marched down Queen street on the way to Quay street. They stopped at intervals to shout in unison: “We want work.” In Quay street another meeting was held, several speakers addressing the crowd. A small group of sonstables watched, hut the meeting broke up seemingly of its own accord early in the afternoon.
