TEACHING PROFESSION
HIT BY UNEMPLOYMENT (By Telegraph—Press Association) NAPIER., 15th January. The teaching profession, in common with all other interests, would be seriously affected in the matter of unemployment, stated Mr G. A. Maddison, chairman of the Hawkes Bay Education Board, to-day. At present, he said, the hoard had ju its lists the names of teachers awaiting employment, but it was anticipated that, on a liberal estimate, not more than 15 to 20 of these could be engaged by Ist February, when the schools reopened. “There is always a certain amount of unemployment among ex-trainees at the beginning of each year,” he remarked, “but the position in 1931 will he serious and far worse than it has ever been previously. The position, of course, is accentuated by the necessity of economy in expenditure.”
