RECENT INCREASES All freight prepaid at the port of shipment- on cargo from Australia to the United Kingdom or Continent is now subject to an exchange surcharge of 15 per cent. 'lbis is an increase in the surcharge of 61 per cent. Announcing its decision to increase the surcharge on freight, the oversea Shipping Representatives’ Association has issued a statement pointing out that tile surcharge only affected that small proportion of general cargo on which freight was not paid at the port of destination. Refrigerated cargo and fruit, the .association explained, was only subject tu 3 per cent, exchange, under agreements arranged by the Australian Oversea Transport Association. “It has been the practice of oversea shipping companies,” the statement continued, “to endeavour to give some notice where alterations in exchange have been contemplated, but-, owing to the uncertainty of the exchange position, they must m future, reserve the right to alter the exchange rate on prepaid general cargo freight as the position warrants.
