UNIVERSITY SENATE

REDUCED EXPENDITURE (By Telegraph—Press Association) AUCKLAND, 14th January. The hearing of the address of the Chancellor, Professor J. Macmillan Brown, discussions in committee, and consideration of a number of matters of detail occupied the Senate of the University of New Zealand at its opening session to-day. The Chancellor presided over an attendance of twenty-two, representing all affiliated institutions, and including the Vice-Chancellor, Professor T. A. Hunter, the Pro-Chancellor, the Hon. J. A. Hanan, and the treasurer, Mr H. F. Von Haast.

An estimate of the financial position of the University for the current year, which ends on 31st March, was submitted by the treasurer. The estimated credit balance was £1342. The Senate discussed the financial position in committee, and adopted the following resolution: “That in view of the financial position the executive committee be directed and authorised to make such reduction in expenditure as present exigencies may require, and if such reduction should involve alteration of the statutes, the Chancellor shall, on the recommendation of that committee, convene a special meeting of the Senate to consider such alteration.” In the past it has been the practice of the New Zealand University to hold its November examinations *at any centre at which there were ten candidates, and where there were fewer than that number they were allowed to have an examination in their centre if they made up the total fees to 20 guineas. At the last November examinations there were 44 centres in New Zealand. A proposal made to the Senate to-day provided for a reduction of the number of centres. This would involve the abolition of examination centres at Pukekohe, Thames, Morrinsville, Opotiki, Te Kuiti, Stratford, Marton, Feilding, Hastings, Waipukurau, Petone, Motueka, Reefton, Waimate. The motion was carried and the matter was referred to the executive committee to take action.
