PIG INDUSTRY

PURCHASING ON GRADE (By Telegraph--Pros* Asßooiatlou) PALMERSTON N., 13th January. The most important decision yet made in the pig industry in New Zealand was arrived at to-day when representative curers and producers, with the acquiescence of the Department of Agriculture, agreed to the principle of purchasing baconers and porkers on grade, to start from 19th January. The top weight for baconers was raised from 1401 b to 1501 b. All grading and weight will be carried out and supervised by Government inspectors. It is hoped that, as now New Zealand is following a system that has been long established and recognised by pig-rais-ing countries, the farmer will respond with the right type of pig, and that within the next two or three years New Zealand will he able to fulfil the requirements on the Home market, which the Danes are now supplying.
