OLD BOYS V. ATHLETIC WELLS NEARLY REACHES CENTURY On Saturday, the senior matches commenced on 20th December were completed. On the first clay, Olcl Boys scored 430 for two wickets against Athletic and declared at the commencement of play on Saturday. Athletic made a very had start losing Ralfe, Kinzett and Vasta with only 23 on the hoard in 35 minutes. Wells and Hull, however, then put on a very fine partnership of 140 for the fourth wicket and quite settled any possibility of an outright defeat. Wells, who a few years ago was as stubborn a stonewaller as has ever been seen in local cricket, played the innings of his life and anything anywhere near the outside was almost unfailing sent to the boundary. In all lie hit 17 fours and was distinctly unlucky to miss his first century by only 0 runs. Hull invariably saves up his best score every season for Olcl Boys ancl came to light again when runs were wanted. So fast did Wells score, however, that Hull claimed only 47 (including 8 fours) of the wicket partnership. The two batsmen strangely enough were out to successive balls. These were the only double figure scorers but they managed to keep the innings going till 5.15, six wickets falling for 19 runs. With no hope of an outright win, Olcl Boys batted again with the batsmen who had no innings on the first clay ancl some excellent form was shown. Busch had a great match, getting 134 not out ancl five wickets for 34. WEST INDIES V. QUEENSLAND
VISITORS SCORE 309 CONSTANTINE’S BRIGHT DISPLAY 1 (United Press Association—By Eleotrio Telegraph—Copyright) BRISBANE, 11th January. At the West Indies v. Queensland match the teams were: West Lndies — Grant, Constantine, Headley, Roach, Martin, Scott, Birkett, Francis, Sealey, Hunte, and Wright. De Caires is twelfth man. The Queensland team is— Gough, Oxenham, Bensted, Goodwin, Duncan, Gilbert, Thurlow, Brew, Adams, McFarlane, and Mossop. Harding is twelfth man.
West Indies won the toss and made their best opening of the tour. At tea they had lost only four wickets for 208 runs. Roach and Martin gave the side a good start, scoring 75 before Roach went. Both played solidly, punshing loose balls. A weak stroke off a bad ball dismissed Roach. He walked out to a short-pitched one, and spooned it. Headley gave a polished display and was out to a bumpy one which he played on.
Martin’s fine stand ended ten runs later, when he touched a fast one and was taken behind the wickets. Birkett and Grant became associated in a partnership, which, if slow at times, greatly improved the visitors’ position. Grant was enterprising but safe. Birkett s stand was full of merit, a mixture of aggression and defensive play. He was unlucky to miss his half century by one. The game then again became duli, VVest Indies being all out for 309. In the cricket match M.C.C. v. Natal the Marylebone team was: Chapman, White, Peebles, Turnbull, Hendren, Leyland, Allom, Voce, Goddard, Hammond and Lee.
The Natal team was: Wade, Parry, Woods, Dalton, A. Woods, Hamilton, Wright, Forster, Gadsden, Williams and Dailies. The weather was hot and there was a small attendance.
Natal was dismissed in 24 hours for 107, the smallest score yet mado against the tourists in a first class match. The batsmen were completely at sea against the devastating bowling of Voce.
