OPENING DELAYED BY RAIN (.By Telegraph—Press Association) AUCKLAND, This Day. Everything was in readiness for starting the" Dominion Championship bowling tourney to-day at 9 o’clock when a , soaking shower of rain fell for nearly an hour. It was practically the first rain which has fallen in the daytime since 17th December. It was decided to postpone play at 12.30 o’clock to-day and play three rounds instead of four. There are 272 entrants in the singles. The programme provides for singles play to-day, to-morrow pairs, Wednesday and Thursday, rinks starting on Friday. About 350 bowlers arrived from other centres and the tournament is being played on 14 greens in various parts of the city and suburbs. Visitor’s include fourteen New South Welshmen,. and two Victorians. Singles competitors include F. Lambeth, of Balmacewan, Dunedin, who was champion in 1930, M. Walker (Ponsonby), H. C. Clarke (Rocky Nook, Auckland), J. Kilgour (Carlton, Auckland), J. C. Regby (North East Valley, Dunedin), J. D. Best (Dunedin), all former champions. During the tourney the half-yearly meeting of the Dominion Bowling Council will be held and will consider inter alia the application of the American Lawn Bowls Association for membership of the International Board.
