GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET
(By Telegraph—Press Association)
CHRISTCHURCH, 10th January. There is a little more interest being taken in the grain and produce market this week, in view of the arrival of the harvest season for oats and the approach of that for wheat. Algerian oats are expected to open at 2s 6d on the trucks to farmers, but there are none on the market yet. As in all departments of the market the merchants’ position is a wailing one, :t is difficult to make any reliable forecast. Chaff is quoted at £5 a ton, f.0.b., s.i., Lyttelton, for April. May and June delivery, which is equivalent to about £3 10s a ton to the farmers on the trucks at country stations. . . There has been a little more activity in potatoes, which have been sold. at £4 and £4 2s 6d a ton, f.0.b., 5.i.,. for April, May, and June delivery. This is equivalent to a little over £3 a ton on the trucks. Tuscan wheat is quoted at 5s 9d, f.0.b., Lyttelton, for forward business. Merchants are not anxious to do business at that figure, however. That price is equal to 5s 5d to 5s 6d on the trucks to the farmers, according to the stations. Fowl wheat for forward delivery is quoted at 5s 2d, f.0.b., s.i., for either March-September or March-De-cember. However, it is merely of the speculative variety betvveen merchants. There is some activity in peas. No. 1 partridge peas are quoted at 5s 3d, f.0.b., s.i., Lyttelton, and some sales have been made at that figure.
