NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

The North Island lawn tennis championship meeting was continued in bright breezy weather. The courts were slow hut drying fast. Results : Men’s doubles, third round, Hubble and Turner beat Bartleet and Griffiths 6- 6-4. Semi-finals: Hubble and Turner beat Wallace and Webster 4 : 6, 6-3, 7Boys’ final: Davys beat Wilson 6-1, 6-5. Girls’ single, semi-final: B. Griffiths beat It. Pepper 6-3, 6-5. SUCCESSFUL NEW ZEALANDER ANDREWS DEFEATS AUSTIN (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) CALCUTTA. lOlli January. Bunny Austin met Ids match when the New Zealander Andrews defeated him at Delhi in a gruelling match, 2-6, 13-11, 6-3, thus reversing the decision at their recent meeting at Calcutta, when Austin won in straight sets. Once again Austin’s physique let him down. RESULTS OF FINALS NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. The North Island and Taranaki tennis championships concluded. N. R. C. Wilson (Wellington) won tile men’s singles from E. L. Bartleet (Auckland). The finalists had two sets each. During the third set Bartleet who had not been well during most of the tournament, defaulted. Had lie remained fit the match may have gone considerably further, and it is doubtful who would have won. Miss Knight (Auckland) outplayed Mrs W. J. Melody (Wellington) in the final of the women’s singles. Results: — Men’s Singles, final—Wilson heat Bartleet 0-2, 3-0, 0-3, 4-0. Women’s Singles, final—Miss Knight (Auckland) heat Mrs Melody (Wellington) 0-3, 0-4. Men’s Doubles, final—Sledman and Wilson heat Turner and Hubble 7-5, 3-0, 0-3, 0-3. Women’s Doubles, final—Miss Knight and Miss Whitelaw (Auckland) heat Miss Bundle and J. Taylor (New Plymouth) 0-0, 0-2. Combined Doubles, final—Wilson and Mrs W. J. Melody heat Bartleet and Miss McFarlanc 0-2* 4-0, 0-1. Boys’ Singles, final—N., Davys heat R. W. Wilson 0-1, 0-5. Girl's Singles, final —Miss Griffiths heat Miss A. Graham (Wavcrley) 0-3, 3-0.
Miss Griffiths had reached 5-3 and 15 love in the third set when Miss Graham had to retire owing to illness.
