CIVIC AFFAIRS
MEETING OF CITY COUNCIL REPORTS AND GENERAL BUSINESS At the Nelson City Council meeting last evening there were present the Mayor (Mr W. J. Moffatt), Councillors R. Watson, W. McConehie, J. Stringer, G. F. Russell, S. A. Gibbs, F. W. Huggins and G. Page. Councillor S. PI. Moynagh, who is out of town, was excused from attendance. PAYMENTS The following payments were authorised:— £ s. d. CORRESPONDENCE
The Council’s London representatives wrote regarding the gas plant. It was decided that as the plant purchased comprised parts only the Council would not require their services in connection with Lhe purchase. The Seventh Day Adventists wrote thanking the Council for the use of the baths for a baptismal service. A petition was received from residents in St. Vincent street requesting the Council to clean out the ditch in that street. The Engineer stated that the Railway Department staff had commenced to clean out «the ditch and he considered they would continue. ’Hie Department is to be asked to expedite the work owing Lo its importance. Residents in the vicinity of Richardson street requested the tarring of that street. The Mayor said the Council would be pleased to do it if possible. The Council would like to tar all the streets. As the cost of tar sealing was only £2 per chain more than ordinary metalling it was decided lo tar seal the road.
Mr F. H. Sharland was granted permission to run sheep on the Botanical Reserve.
Mr G. V. Swafford requested the formation of a footpath in Emano street. The matter was referred to committee to report. Mr E. F. Smith’s offer to sell a section of land in Brook street was declined. The Council decided to offer £2O for the section.
The owners of sections in Tukuka street requested an extension of tho drainage alo- that street. The matter was referred to the Engineer to interview the property owners regarding conditions. ,
